Vrankrijk

Vrankrijk

Although I would't directly refer to Vrankrijk as sleazy, it is certainly an alternative bar that needs to be recommended on this site.

Vrankrijk is an old squatters place, that exists already for twenty years. Ten years ago the building was legally obtained, and last year they received a true permit for serving alcohol (although they were doing it already for twenty years).

Drinks are very cheap in Vrankrijk. However they don't always stay open late. Atmosphere is very good. On Saturdays you can dance a bit. Besides that there are lots of activities, and benefit nights.

Unfortunately most squatting places have disappeared in Amsterdam. Lets hope Vrankrijk stays!

Update: Unfortunately Vrankrijk was permanently closed in 2009 by the City of Amsterdam.

Magasles

Palinka

In the south of Hungary is a very small city called Szigetvar and somewhere there you'll maybe find the gypsy bar Magasles.
It is run by a very friendly lady called Eva and if you're lucky a very old gypsy will play the violin - like, all night long. And the nights are long in this place.
Be sure to know enough hungarian to order a beer (Sör), wine ("bor") or the locally brewed palinka (if you like a glass of glue) because it's the only language spoken there.

No dogs allowed (except mine).

The Sheriff

The Sheriff

If you ever enter Guyana, and I suppose you never will, this sleazy bar I recommend to visit.

The Sheriff is located on Sheriff street in Georgetown. It is not the safest place in Georgetown, but if you have a big mouth and some common sense, you'll have an ok time. A couple of years ago, a research pointed out that approximately 90% of all males and females in Sherif street 'got hit by the big truck' (HIV-positive). So if a beautiful girl asks for a drink, be ware, they are never what they seem. Read more »

The Walabeba

Walabeba

This place is recommended to us by our dear friend, Uncle Sam.

The Walabeba is located on the Awudome (street). The place is one of many in Accra, but since it is located in the home town of Sam, we post this one. It is open 24 hours. To enter you have to go through a gate, before you reach the compound. The Walabeba is owned by a lady. If she's asleep you just wake her up and the bar is open. There is live music and of course you'll have to drink the 'kill me quick' (Akpeteshi, the local drink made of roots and destilled palmwine).

If you ever go there let us know, and bring a bottle of Akpeteshi to Amsterdam!

The Minds

De-Voorkant-Nacht.jpg

In the center of Amsterdam you'll find The Minds which is easily associated with the punk/squat scene.
The best thing about the Minds (apart from the athmosphere) is it's closing time, although it always depends on the owner's ("Dre") mood. Be sure to be in on time because after official closing time the blinds close and you won't make a chance.

They serve dutch beer named Budels which is best consumed from the bottle -not for the taste but it looks cooler and they serve draft in those small shitty glasses.

The Minds is famous for their live bands at Queens Day (30th april).

The Modern Greenbar

tusker.jpg

The Green Bar has been open twenty four hours a day, every day since 1968 and has never closed. The bartender is enclosed in a huge iron cage. To obtain a drink, one hands 18 KSh through the grill and receives one warm, 500ml bottle of Tusker Beer. (If you want a cold one ask for a 'Tusker baridi'). Read more »

Your nose is equipped for bars, if you find this one. And even than you sometimes have to thump the door to get in. If you do get in, you enter a world deep down below, with walls made of red and flames. Read more »

Mickey's Old Timers Bar

Passed out people to the point of being almost meditative, glasses with lip lines, and seats stickier than a nudie movie booth floor.

The Elbo Room

The Elbo Room

Let me say this about that.

A year or so ago, I wrote a series of blogs extolling the virtues of one of my favorite subjects - ‘Sleazy Bars’. Hanging out in a sleazy bar is like hands-on research for all the evils you hear about when you go to church. In fact, it is rumored that Moses did not receive the 10 Commandments from God during a little mountain-climbing expedition to Mount Sinai, but assembled these moral imperatives from notes taken while slamming tequila shots in a sleazy bar. De Doofpot

Since ages the closing times of bars in amsterdam are a complete disaster.
This is a problem for me as a part-time bartender because I like to sit down and have a nice drink in a bar after a long night of work.
Or tell my clientele where to go when I have to sweep the floor. So nightbars are a must. Read more »

Craby Joe's

This bar is near the corner of Main Street and 7th Street. Its in Skid Row. Its point of interest is that it is in the title montage of the film written by Charles Bukowski, "Barfly". At that time, the neon sign was still working. I'm interested in restoring the sign. There is no "bartime" at this bar. The stay open right up to 2:00 AM, at which time everyone is pushed out the door.

The Sandy Jug

Sort of explains why they recently outlawed masturbation shows. The women are as sleazy as the beer is flat. Located conveniently next door to the local Harley-Davidson dealership. Read more »

De Ster

Be prepared for some loud music before entering this place as it's official subtitle is 'Home Of Metal History'. You can hear anything from Manowar to Mayhem and from Rammstein to Morbid Angel. Run by Johnny and his wife Mieke this place is one of the best hangouts in Holland. It opens between 22:00 and 23:00 at night and it closes at about 04:00 am on regular days but on friday and especially saturday it doesn't close until Johnny's bored. And he doesn't get bored quick when there's drunk people to talk to!

The beer is fairly cheap compared to the surrounding bars in the centre of Groningen. Order bottles though! Read more »

Pipa Club

Pipa Club

To enter, one has to ring the doorbell and walk up to the first floor. It's not very sleazy, but it's open till late. Of course, the later you'll arrive, the more you feel at home. The clientele is a mixture of tourists and catalans, the drinks are relatively expensive, and there used to be a waitress with long legs, leather boots, a short skirt and a skimpy shirt, but I haven't seen her the last few times I was there.

But it's open untill quite late, or did I mention that already?
