Holland Bar

Located at 532 Ninth Ave. (Midtown West) Between 39th and 40th Sts. Wow. I didn't know this place still existed in the new New York City. I had to meet my friend in the area and I wanted to go to a bar. I looked this up on the Internet and thought it was safe enough. I ended up being 20 minutes late. I found my friend at the bar sipping from a bottle of Budweiser(yech) while slowly but noticebaly giving sidelong glances to the barflies.

There was this woman in her 50's, noticably drunk and just yelling to herself as she walked up and down the bar. Sometimes she would get a response from the bartender or apparently some regulars at the end of the bar. It was hard to say.

The men at the bar would read the NY Post or Daily News and were drinking liquor. The bartender had a dirty apron and sometimes would dissapear for a stretch or two.

I remember a lot of unfinished wood and newspaper clips from the 70's and before. There was a pinball machine in the back and/or a jukebox that was dated but fit the bar. Everyone except my friend and myself looked weathered. Still, no one bothered me as long as we didn't bother them.

Forget about drinking anything good. They had some beer on tap but it wasn't anything memorable. I just drank the bottleneck Budweisers(yech) but we were only there for about an hour or less. My friend had enough of the place. This was on a Thursday at 4:30 pm.

I have not returned to the place. There was no reason for me to go back unless I just wanted to disappear.
